E-commerce funding boost for North West manufacturers

East Manchester-based website designer and developer, Duo Design, has secured European funding from The Manufacturing Institute to help a Manchester manufacturer grow its business using e-commerce.

The funding forms part of a new initiative to help manufacturers in deprived areas of the North West expand into new markets using online marketing and will be used by Duo Design to develop a new website for mechanical engineering company, Thomas Shaw, which is based in Holt Toan, Ancoats.

The funding will finance 50 per cent of the total cost of the project, and Thomas Shaw will pay the other half.

Thomas Shaw, which was founded in Ancoats in 1924, has traditionally manufactured mechanical equipment for the food and plastics industries, but is now developing a niche in the architectural sector, manufacturing steel balconies, staircases and balustrades for the construction market.

The new website will be designed to showcase examples of Thomas Shaw’s products to potential new customers, including developers, architects and construction companies.

Andy Rose, director of Duo Design, which is based at One Central Park, said:  “There are dozens more manufacturers across Manchester that could qualify for this funding, but most are unaware that it exists or don’t think that they qualify.

“A well-managed website can give a business global reach and even put a small business on an equal footing with its multinational competitors by opening up new markets for relatively little financial investment.

“It’s unthinkable for any business not to have a website these days, and a good one will help attract new business, sell products and services, communicate with customers, partners and employees, break into overseas markets, and generally raise their profile in their market.

Jane Law, at The Manufacturing Institute, said:  “The funding is being awarded to help manufacturers diversify online, either by driving sales inquiries more effectively or by actively generating new sales via e-commerce.'

We are currently working with a number of other local Manufacturers with this funding helping them take their web presence from a simple online brochure, to in a many cases a fully fledge content managed e-commerce site.
